P300 brain-computer interface moves from lab to classroom
The project began as a final-year engineering thesis by Marta Rodríguez Comino, supervised by Dr. Joaquín T. Valderrama and Dr. Iván López Espejo at the University of Granada.
Participants were asked to focus on a chosen digit while numbers appeared on a screen. When the target appeared, it triggered a stronger P300 response, a brain signal associated with attention. Using Bitbrain’s Versatile EEG, signal processing and machine learning, the system could distinguish the attended digit from the others.

The demonstration showed how P300-based brain-computer interfaces can translate measurable brain activity into interaction with external systems, with potential applications ranging from assistive communication to device control.
By taking the experiment outside the laboratory, the project also gave nearly 100 students first-hand exposure to EEG, neuroscience and BCI technology in action.
