Ring is a wearable and wireless real-time biosignal recording equipment to deal with real-life application scenarios with ecology and quality. The device has an ultralight and comfortable design with 2 key biosensors for a basic estimation of emotions (electrodermal activity and cardiac activity), and a three-axis solidary accelerometer for an estimation of the noise that can be generated due to the movement of the hand. Its ergonomics, reliability and possibility of self-positioning by the end user open an infinite range of possibilities to use it both in the laboratory and in the home, at shopping centers, automotive, or work, among many others.

Great reliability

Ring has placed the sensors of electrodermal activity and cardiovascular activity in the place of measurement of the human body in which greater reliability is obtained: the second and first phalanges of the fingers respectively. In addition, as recommended on a scientific level, the equipment has a solidary accelerometer with the measuring point to record any micro-movement of the sensors (which will inevitably lead to measurement noise), and thus correct or discard it online or in later stages of analysis. Finally, as it the equipment is wireless, it eliminates the problem of noise that is generated in the measurements when they move.

Natural behavior in a large number of applications

The Ring biosensor system allows the user to have a natural and spontaneous behavior in most applications while recording their biosignals. On the one hand, its minimalist design, ergonomic, comfortable and with dry sensors, favors the user to forget that he is wearing the device. On the other, since it is a portable device, without cables and with an autonomy of approximately eight hours, it allows maximum freedom of movement without intervention or close presence of researchers.

Easy self-placing in under 10 seconds

The minimalist design of Ring makes it an intuitive and easy-to-use system, allowing quick and easy collection of physiological data. Any end-user without previous experience can place the device correctly in approximately 10 seconds. This makes it the fastest and easiest placing equipment on the market in its category.

Simultaneous recording of multiple people

In local storage mode, Ring can be used to make simultaneous and synchronized records of all the people you want thanks to its communication protocols that minimize drift between equipment. In the wireless data transmission mode, synchronized recordings can be performed with up to 8 devices simultaneously (expandable on request). In addition, the time lost in the deployment before recording is minimal thanks to the quick and easy placement of the device.

High acceptance by the user

With a user-centered design, Ring is a device that has a high acceptance by the user. Its aesthetic is careful and technological, it has great usability and ergonomics making its use very easy and comfortable, and its sensors do not need to apply electrolytic substances between the electrode and the skin, thus eliminating the uncomfortable feeling of the end users who must wash their hands by the end.

Easy maintenance and no associated costs

The equipment is easily cleaned with a common sanitizer wipe. Compared to other equipment that requires stickers with conductive substances, the Ring system eliminates spending on consumables and simplifies the set-up of the laboratory as much as possible.

Components

Ring is a mobile and compact biosignal recording system so easy to use that it can be placed correctly by the end user in approximately 10 seconds. The maintenance is simple since it does not need perishables and the transport can be carried out in a pocket.

1. Sensors

Ring has three integrated sensors without wires:

  • Electro-thermal activity sensor (galvanic skin response, GSR): High resolution and reliability sensor with high contact surface to minimize micro-movements.
  • Cardiac activity sensor (cardiovascular response, BVP): Sensor based on an innovative design that does not need to cover the finger to operate reliably.
  • 3-axis accelerometer (movement in X, Y and Z, ACC): Sensor of great sensitivity and solidarity with the rest of sensors to record any type of micro-movement.

2. Layout

The Ring sensors have been placed following all the scientific-technical recommendations: the sensor of electrodermal activity is placed in the second phalanges of the fingers, the sensor of cardiovascular activity is placed in the first phalanx, and the accelerometer is solidary with the rest sensors.

3. Amplifier

The equipment is small and ultralight (60gr) and allows recording at 32 Hz the 3 sensors (GSR, BVP y ACC). The connection of the equipment is made via Bluetooth with a range of up to 10 meters and allows recording for 8 hours continuously. It is also possible to record in your MicroSD for more freedom of movement for 12 hours.

4. Included Software

Ring includes software that allows controlling and executing studies in an easy and simple way. It can be executed on any computer or tablet with Windows 7 or higher, and Linux Ubuntu. The software allows device configuration, start-stop recording, live data visualization (online), import and playback of recorded data, and export of data in CSV format compatible with Matlab, Python, etc.

Integrations

With other hardware technologies

The equipment can be combined with many other hardware technologies to obtain more information about human behavior (such as biosensors, eye-trackers, location technology, video and audio recording, etc.). This integration can be done through any of the Bitbrain platforms that maintain the highest level of synchronization with very low latency and without the need for the participant to carry a laptop.

With software platforms

The equipment can be used within the Bitbrain modular platforms for research applications in neuroscience or neuromarketing. The platforms allow simultaneous recordings with other technologies and perform analysis autonomously or using Bitbrain's analysis programs. Additionally, for any special requirement, Bitbrain has customized adaptation services.

With development tools
