Wearable and light system for real-time monitoring of the EEG with maximum comfort and minimum intrusion in natural conditions and real-life applications. With a simple positioning, it allows recording with great reliability up to 12 dry EEG channels in optimized positions for a basic estimation of emotions and cognitive behaviors (pre-frontal, frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital cortex). Its great portability, ergonomics and easy placement, open an infinite range of possibilities for use both in the laboratory and in the home, at shopping centers, automotive, or work, among many others.
Estimation of emotions and cognitive behaviors
Diadem has twelve sensors placed in symmetrical positions on the pre-frontal, frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital cortex in optimized positions to favor an estimation of emotions and cognitive behaviors. For example, with Diadem it is possible to obtain the frontal and parietal asymmetry in alpha (emotion), the visual P300 and mismatch negativity N400 (cognitive processes), the power ratio theta/beta in frontal (memorization), among others.
A key feature of Diadem is that it facilitates the user to have a natural and spontaneous behavior while recording their EEG. On the one hand, its minimalist, ergonomic, comfortable design with dry sensors favors the user in order for them to feel comfortable wearing the device. On the other, since it is a portable device, without cables and with an autonomy of more than eight hours, it allows maximum freedom of movement without intervention or close presence of researchers.
Quick and easy placement
The minimalist design of Diadem makes it an intuitive and easy-to-use EEG system, allowing quick and easy data collection. Any researcher or end user can easily place the device without previous experience with the help of procedures guided by the system. The placement time is usually less than 2.5 minutes on average, which makes the team one of the fastest systems to place in the market.
Great precision and reliability
Diadem has an innovative system of dry sensors that go through the hair and accommodate to the skin without disturbing, as it have a patented mechanical design that ensures stable contacts over time, and an electronics with active shields to eliminate noise and interference. All this makes Diadem a robust system in the EEG record without the need for conductive substances.
High acceptance by the user
With a user-centered design, Diadem is a device that has a high acceptance by the user. Its aesthetic is careful and technological, it has a maximum ergonomics that make its use very comfortable, and its sensors do not need to apply electrolytic substances between the electrode and the skin, which eliminates the feeling of rejection of the end users towards gels (as it eliminates the need of washing the head after recording).
Easy maintenance and no associated costs
The equipment is easily cleaned with a common sanitizer wipe. Compared to other equipment that requires conductive substances, Diadem eliminates spending on consumables (jars of gels, syringes, shampoo for participants...); the time in hygienic procedures to clean caps and sensors is minimized, and the need for spare parts to continue operating while they are being cleaned is eliminated.
It has 12 sensors placed in pre-frontal, frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital areas (Fp1, Fp2, AF7, AF8, F3, F4, P3, P4, PO7, PO8, O1 and O2). This allows us to measure for example activity related to emotional processes (frontal and parietal asymmetry in alpha), cognitive processes (frontal theta), relaxation processes (power in occipital alpha), visual components of evoked potential (N1, P2, P300), cognitive potentials (mismatch negativity N400 and negative contingency variation CVN), facial gestures (facial EMG) or eye movements (EOG) among others.
Its light (190gr) and flexible design that adapts to the specific morphology of each head makes it a very comfortable, ergonomic and easy to handle device. Additionally, it has side adjustments to cover different head sizes including:
- Europe and USA: Men P5- P95 and Women P20-P99 (with civilization averaging its percentage of Hispanics, African-Americans and whites).
- China and Latin America: Men P5- P99 and Women P40-P99.
Dry sensors with materials and manufacturing techniques that reduce contact impedances and noise without the need to use conductive electrolytic substances. They have active shields to minimize artifacts due to movements or electromagnetic interference. Designed with a pivoting mechanism to pierce the hair and guarantee a stable electrode-skin contact, and with self-adapting pressure control to assure user comfort.
The Diadem amplifier is small and light (125gr) and allows recording at 256 Hz the 12 EEG channels and its internal IMU. It has online relative impedance measurement to correct the assembly before and during recording. It also has a digital and analog auxiliary input that allows synchronization with other devices or add other sensors. The connection of the equipment is made via Bluetooth with a range of up to 10 meters and allows recording for 8 hours continuously. It is also possible to record in your MicroSD for more freedom of movement for 10 hours.
5. Included Software
Diadem includes software that allows controlling and executing studies in an easy and simple way. It can be executed on any computer or tablet with Windows 7 or higher, and Linux Ubuntu. The software allows device configuration, start-stop recording, live data visualization (online), import and playback of recorded data, and export of data in CSV format compatible with Matlab, Python, etc.
With other hardware technologies
The equipment can be combined with many other hardware technologies to obtain more information about human behavior (such as biosensors, eye-trackers, location technology, video and audio recording, etc.). This integration can be done through any of the Bitbrain platforms that maintain the highest level of synchronization with very low latency and without the need for the participant to carry a laptop.
With software platforms
The equipment can be used within the Bitbrain modular platforms for research applications in neurosciences, health or neuromarketing. The platforms allow simultaneous recording with other technologies and perform the analysis autonomously or using Bitbrain's automatic analysis.
